Here’s where owners get tripped up: Copperfield changed its base flange depth around 2016. Pre-2016 caps have a 2-1/2″ skirt; post-2016 moved to 3″. Order the wrong one and you’ll gap at the crown or overhang into the flue. • Water in the firebox or hearth after rain. The cap’s mesh screen has corroded through or the lid seam has split, letting precipitation straight down the flue. In Camden’s freeze-thaw cycles, that water expands in the smoke chamber and accelerates liner deterioration.
• Rust stains down the brick face below the crown. Galvanized caps lose their zinc coating first at the corners where water pools. Once the steel underneath goes, the runoff stains masonry in streaks that don’t wash off without abrasive cleaning.
