Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Cold downdraft even with the damper “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame seal has eroded, letting outside air pour down. In Camden’s row homes, this often shows up as a persistent chill on the first floor even when the thermostat reads normal.
• Smoke spilling into the room when you light a fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, or the plate has dropped out of alignment and blocks half the flue throat. This usually means the pivot pin has sheared or the linkage has corroded.
• The handle is stuck, loose, or spins freely. A stuck handle means the pivot mechanism has seized, often from rust or creosote cementing the parts. A spinning handle means the internal spline has stripped, and the plate isn’t moving at all.
• You hear rattling or clanking when the wind blows. The plate has cracked or pulled free from its pivot, and it’s flapping in the flue draft. This gets worse in Camden’s winter nor’easters.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one safe check a homeowner can do: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for obvious cracks in the plate, or try the handle and note whether the plate actually moves. Beyond that, damper replacement involves working at height inside the firebox throat, often with corroded fasteners that snap off and require extraction. The plate itself is awkward and heavy, and seating it wrong means smoke or carbon monoxide in the living space.
